Baseball Lessons from the Great Joe McCaskill

(#11)

Joe McCaskill pitched for Willis Steenhuis at Jackson Central in the early 1970s. He also was a star two-way player at Belhaven College, a Mississippi Semi-Pro Baseball legend, a born again believer in Jesus Christ, a loving husband and father, a successful businessman and an awesome person.

He was my favorite player to watch when I was growing up. He had a smooth, but powerful swing at the plate and the gas he threw from the mound always seemed effortless.

When I batted against “Mr. Baseball,” more than once He taught me the meaning of the old baseball adage:

Good morning, good afternoon, and goodnight!”

Three fastballs; the first two “I just looked at,” one at the knees for strike one, the second one a little higher than the first for strike two and the “punchout” about head high that I just waved at for strike three.
