(#20) (Most recent fine-tuning, October, 2024)
In a 1994 doubleheader at Wesson (MS), Copiah-Lincoln‘s hard throwing right-hander Chris Weekly pitched a complete game no-hitter against the Eagles in game 1.
In game 2, Hinds‘ hard throwing right-hander David Townsend returned the favor and pitched a complete game no-hitter of his own against the Wolfpack.
That’s something you don’t see every day.
In the post-season that year, Townsend outdueled Tim Hudson (formerly of the Oakland A’s. Atlanta Braves, St. Louis Cardinals) to help lead Hinds to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Millington, Tennessee. Hinds was the first Mississippi team to play in the D2 World Series.
Townsend went on to pitch for Bill Marchant at Delta State University and won the Dick Howser Award as the NCAA Division II Pitcher AND Player of the Year in 1996. He was 16-1 with a 2.33 ERA. Dave led the Statesmen to the NCAA Division II World Series in Montgomery, Alabama that season.
He was drafted in the 5th round of the Major League Baseball draft and played professional baseball for the Florida Marlins organization for 4 years.
