(#33)
I specifically remember two shots that Stan Prewitt hit when he was our great shortstop and leader at Magnolia Academy from 1977 through 1979.
He hit more than two shots in his career, but these two are ingrained in my mind decades later.
One was a line drive off Tim Schutz, a hard throwing right-hander from Brandon Academy
The shot hit him in the head and ricocheted into left field for a RBI single. Schutz survived the lick and continued pitching, but the Rebels lost the game.
The other was a solo home run against Parklane in the 1979 playoffs to put us ahead in the top of the 7th inning at McComb. We held on to beat the Pioneers 4-2, swept the South Mississippi Championship series, got revenge for a 3 game series lost to Parklane in 1978, and advanced to our first state championship series with Greenville Christian the following week.
When asked about that shot in his radio interview, Stan said he just “got the barrel on the ball.”
“Hitting is timing and timing is getting the barrel of the bat in the right place at the right time.”
At all levels of baseball, good things happen when you get the barrel on the ball.
He did that a lot.
It’s amazing what happens to baseballs when you get the barrel on them.
