(#69)

When I was in the 10th grade at Forest Hill I played second base and was pretty good with the glove. A senior, Buddy Oxley was the starter and he was pretty good, too and I learned a lot from him.

He gave me the nickname “Hoover” because he said I was like a vacuum cleaner at second base. I was so proud of this and told Coach Perry what Buddy had said.

He said, “No, he calls you Hoover because you suck like a vacuum cleaner,” and walked away.

Thank God self-esteem is “self” esteem because I certainly wasn’t getting any from him. 😁

Lessons learned: It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. It only matters what you think. Remember, it’s SELF-esteem, stupid!

Criticism taken the right way produces mental toughness.
