If It Ain’t Broke, Don’t Fix it

(#89)

In 1992, Steve Bourgeois, a right-hander from Reserve, Louisiana started both games of a double-header against Southwest Mississippi. He went the distance in each 5 inning game, was the winning pitcher in each, and struck out 24 batters on the day.

That would have been 21.6 strikeouts in a nine inning game!

He was drafted after his junior year at the University of Louisiana-Monroe in the 21st round by the San Francisco Giants, was the Texas League Pitcher of the Year in 1995 after a 12-3 record and 2.85 ERA for the Shreveport Captains, the Giants AA affiliate, and pitched in the major leagues during the 1996 season, making his ML debut on April 3rd in Atlanta.

He was the second of three Hinds players to pitch in the big leagues.

Here’s an awesome sidenote: Steve was with the Giants in 1996 when his teammate, the great Barry Bonds, became the first National Leaguer and the second Major Leaguer to hit 40 home runs (42) and steal 40 bases in a single season. How fun is that?
