(#168)
I had a great visit and lunch with Greg Guidry (no kin to Ron Guidry, except for one time for a good cause at Yankee Stadium) from Lafayette, LA. He is the Brand VP for Whataburger in the southeast and was in town and decided to “call the coach” after 36 years.
We had some great conversations about family, baseball. golf, business, Jesus, the Little League World Series, taking his dad to see the Yankees at old Yankee Stadium, and life. I even learned some things from that ’87 bunch that I never heard before, aka, Kelly Dickinson & Pat Rapp. ![]()
Greg also confessed a 3 1/2 decade lie about how he really broke the pinky finger on his throwing hand in the fall of ’86. So it wasn’t really from a fall... He also said I had white hair then. Another lie. I did not. Not yet. 🙂
1987 was Hinds’ first state championship in 37 years (over MDCC), we were Region 23 runner-up (to MDCC) and also made Hinds’ first appearance in the Eastern District Tournament, losing to powerhouse Louisburg, who we would get revenge on in 1989 on our way to Grand Junction, and lost a 9-8, 12 inning battle against Roane State, TN.
Greg hit a home run against Delgado at Meridian to help us fight our way back to the regional championship game. (for that I forgive him for the white lie)
The team finished 38-13. It was my first great Hinds team.
We will resume the visit on his next trip through town with some golf outings I’m sure.
And we’ll be taking our semi-retirement breakfast and lunch clubs to a Whataburger in Ridgeland, Jackson, Brandon, Flowood and/or Richland, of course, working around Wednesday nights at the Mayflower and Fried Chicken Day at 303 Jefferson.
