Bo and Sam

We were in the Superdome in New Orleans years ago, watching an exhibition game between the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox.

My friends, George McQuitter and Richard Kelly, were having a friendly argument about whether or not Bo Jackson could hit the video screen on the wall in the third deck in right center field at the top of the dome.

George argued that Bo could do it and Richard argued that it was not possible.

While they went back and forth with the debate, I noticed a fan, probably drunk, standing on the front row of the third deck in right field. He was the only person in the upper deck and he was leaning over the rail tapping the baseball glove on his left hand.

I sarcastically remarked, “Look at that idiot. There’s no way he’s ever going to get a ball hit to him up there.”

Richard joked, “Not unless Bo Jackson is playing.”

McQuitter replied with a few choice words, as only he could do. All in fun… I think.

In the 7th inning, a big left-handed hitter named Sam Horn strolled to the plate to pinch hit for the Yankees. On a 2-1 count, he smashed a rising line drive that went directly into the glove of the “idiot” in the front row of the third deck.

He didn’t even have to move his glove. No way that could happen. What are the odds?

Maybe Bo Jackson really could hit that video screen after all.

We’ll never know. But Bo knows. And George does, too.

Bo knows!

It’s a long way to the video screen on the back wall of the third deck in right field in the Superdome!
